What is Creative Writing Non-fiction?

Creative Non-fiction is a branch of writing that employs the literary techniques usually associated with fiction or poetry to report on actual persons, places, or events.
"Creative nonfiction is fact-based writing that remains compelling, undiminished by the passage of time, that has at heart an interest in enduring human values: foremost a fidelity to accuracy, to truthfulness."

(Carolyn Forché and Philip Gerard, Introduction, Writing Creative Nonfiction. Story Press, 2001)
Here’s what is written as a definition for creative writing in Wikipedia:

“Creative writing is considered to be any writing, fiction, poetry, or non-fiction, that goes outside the bounds of normal professional, journalistic, academic, and technical forms of literature. Works which fall into this category include novels, epics, short stories, and poems. Writing for the screen and stage, screenwriting and playwriting respectively, typically have their own programs of study, but fit under the creative writing category as well.
What is Creative NonFiction?
  • Creative nonfiction is a type of writing that uses poetry, fiction or other literary techniques to depict real-life events, places or persons.

II. Traditional Genres

1.     Personal Essay:
A personal essay is usually in the first person point-of-view. It talks about a topic on the narrator's personal experience through his/her perspective.
2.     Memoir:
A memoir is a longer creative nonfiction piece with the written account of someone, mostly the writer's, personal experience. It usually shows a noteworthy moment in a writer's life.
3.     Short Short: A short short is a compressed narrative work that is on point. It uses details, like imagery, to relay the message of the piece.
4.     Literary journalism: uses a journalistic approach in order to tell a story. It has a distinct voice and should seem as though that the author is telling a story.
5.     The Lyric Essay:
The lyric essay is somehow like the personal essay. The lyric essay uses imagery and other literary techniques.

III. Elements of Prose Short Story

1.     Character - A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work.
2.     Setting - The setting of a short story is the time and place in which the story takes place. Authors often use descriptions such as culture, symbols & mood, physical scenery, or social conditions to provide a strong sense of setting.
3.     Plot - Related to the central conflict, a plot is a sequence of events and character actions.
4.     Conflict - The conflict is an opposition between two or more people or things in a short story. The main character may be challenged by another character, supernatural forces, against nature, against society, against fate, against culture, against technology, or even himself/herself.
5.     Theme - The theme is the main concept in a short story.

IV. Blogging

  • Blogging is a person's stage wherein he/she can express be himself/herself through writing online. It is often thought to be a personal journey or diary of a person. One can show his/her talents, passions, and thoughts through this platform.
V. Direct and Indirect Representation of Characters

  • Characterization is the process in which the author shows the personality of the character. Characterization can be expressed directly or indirectly.
  • Direct Characterization obviously describes the audience what the personality of the character is.
    • Example: “The loud boy got reprimanded by his angry father.”
    • Explanation: The author is directly telling the audience the personality of the characters. The boy is “loud” while the father is “angry.”
  • Indirect Characterization hints out the personality of a character through other descriptions. There are five different methods of indirect characterization:
1.   Speech - This talks about how the characters talks/speaks.
2.   Thoughts - This talks about the character's inside thoughts, feelings, and insights.
3.   Effect on Others Toward the Character - It speaks about how the other characters react toward the character, or vice versa.
4.   Actions - It talks about the character's behavior, reaction to his environment, and what he does in certain situations.
5.   Looks - The character's personality can also be seen through his/her physical appearance.
